Down Periscope: Maverick naval officer is ultimately given the submarine he requests however it turns out to be a moth balled ruin with a crew that’s not much better. Daniel: A phenomenal adaptation of E. L. Doctorow’s The Novel of Daniel, about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who encounter discrimination due to their heritage in order learn to handle their own lives in the difficult’60s. Not without its imperfections, however overall a seductive and incredibly well-made film. Cast includes Timothy Hullon, Mandy Patinkin, Lindsay Crouse, Edward Asner, Ellen Barkin, Julie Bovasso, Tovah Feldshuh, Joseph Leon, Amanda Plummer, and John Rubinstein. (130 minutes,’83)

Rich in Love: The individuals behind Driving Miss Daisy have taken Josephine Humphreys’ novel and tried to knit another evocative Southern story but they don’t really triumph, although there are numerous fine scenes. The film is based on a child trying to keep her family together. Amid the members are her idle dad (another awesome Finney depiction), missing mom, and nutty sibling. Air Force 1: This movie is a supercharged thriller in regards to aggressive Kazakhstani alarmists taking over Delta one and keeping the President, his family, and his entourage prisoner in midair. Fashion model Jacob meets upset, retired judge Trintignant accidentally, then creates a relationship with him and enters his cloistered, secret life. Set in Geneva, this is a story of a few entangled lives. Cast includes Irene Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frederique Feder, Jean-Pierre Lorit, Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, and Benoit Regent. (99 minutes,’94)

The Great New Wonderful: A striking drama, set one year after 9-11, concentrates on a variety of New Yorkers who either are battling to handle their emotions in regards to that atrocious night or in reference to their lives as if nothing had occurred. They contain a couple with a dysfunctional child, an older lady snared in a miserable matrimony, a set of security guards, and an outwardly affable accountant who worked at the World Trade Center, and survived. Discreet, incisive research of suppressed anger uses humor and observation to dramatize the importance of living a life that has meaning. Buck Privates: An out dated but engaging Army opus with Bud and Lou inadvertently registering for the army. Brassy melodies (containing the Andrews Sisters “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”) and subplots get in the way; however A&C’s regimens are some of their best in their first feature film. Cast includes Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Lee Bowman, Alan Curtis, The Andrews Siblings, Jane Frazee, Nat Pendleton, and Shemp Howard. (84 minutes,’41)

Rhapsody: A 3 way romance between opulent Taylor, violinist Gassman, and pianist Ericson. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Vittorio Gassman, John Ericson, Louis Calhern, and Michael Chekhov. (115 minutes,’54)
