Fancy Dress Ideas - Costumes and Themes

Do you need a little help thinking of some fancy dress ideas? Perhaps youve been invited to a fancy dress party and you need to think of a costume or perhaps youd like to host a party and need to think of a theme. Well this can be simple and fun with the help of a few tips, and creating a costume can be easy and affordable if you know how.

Think of a Theme

Your party theme could be based on something you particularly like or enjoy, such as a favourite movie and the characters or actors in that movie, or maybe a story or a fairy tale, or something you remember from childhood. Or it could perhaps be a decade in history.

To start with think about whether there are many different characters within a theme to make it varied? Then think about whether the costumes within the theme are easy to re-create? Will everybody know something about the theme?

When you have an idea for a theme start to think about whether lots of other people will like it as well. Will they be able to easily copy a character and a costume? Are there enough characters so that all your guests will be able to wear a different costume?

Keep it Cheap

Most people would rather not spend a lot of money on an outfit that will get worn only once so it’s advisable to go for a theme that has a lot of variety of costumes available. This will make it easier and cheaper for you to get a costume.

To make an affordable costume you don’t necessarily have to buy one, you can create your own using your own clothes, borrow certain items or have a look around the charity shops.

Have a look around the internet for second hand and new outfits as it’s possible to find both at relatively cheap prices. Some fancy dress costumes are very expensive but you can get budget options.

Think about Comfort

Always try your costume on well before a party to make sure it is comfortable and has plenty of movement as it’s not like wearing your regular clothes. Comfort is really important if you’re going to enjoy yourself and not be thinking about wearing a fancy dress outfit all night.

If your costume includes a mask, a head piece or is slightly awkward, check whether you need to take it off to eat and drink.

It’s a good idea to think about where the party is being held, how you’ll get there in your costume, and how warm it will be when you arrive. Make sure your costume is appropriate for the time of year as you don’t want to be too hot or too cold.

Have Fun

Make run up to the party fun by getting together with friends to discuss and choose costumes, you can even coordinate your costumes as a group. If you’re going with a partner you could coordinate and get matching costumes.

If you need to create a costume for a theme that you don’t know much about it’s a good idea to do some research by watching a movie on the subject, or alternatively get some information from the internet or flick through some magazines for ideas.

If you enjoy making things you could try being creative and make your own costume rather than buying one. Try it on at before the party and to make it more fun why not get your friends round to help you with some accessories and finishing touches.

Accessories are probably the most important part of any fancy dress costume. They can help to make an affordable costume amazing and they can make you feel really in character.

If you want to stand out accessories are the way to do it as they’ll any costume really look the part. You’ll feel great too with accessories.

Accessories really look like youve made an effort and paid attention to the detail of your character. You can buy pretty much any accessory online so you dont even have to leave the comfort of your own home to create a stunning costume.

If you use all these tips you should have no trouble at all coming up with fancy dress ideas and creating a fantastic costume.
