The digital video recorder has to be the best add-on to my television. Ever since I got connected to the Direct TV Russian package and their new DVR, my television viewing habits have been altered.

Here is how it works.

If you have not watched television with a TiVo or a DVR, you do not know what you are missing. You have complete control over all the programming you decide to watch. If you are watching a program, and all of the sudden you realize that you are hungry, you can just hit the pause button. Go make your food, and come back when you’re ready, even if it takes 15 minutes!

Then when you begin viewing your program again, you will have the added advantage of fast forwarding through any commercials that come up. Pass right through them every time they come up! Sometimes I don’t see a commercial for days.

Now here is how I really use my digital video recorder. I don’t surf through channels anymore. I simply set up my DVR to save the programs I like. Even with sports programming, I set the DVR to record, then I sit down about an hour after the game actually starts. That way, I can fast forward through all the advertisements, and watch the game in half the time.

Lastly, I can always see new episodes of my favorite series. An example, new episodes are coming out soon of Friday Night Lights on DirecTV. On my DVR, all I need to do is select the record series choice, and every time the show airs, my Direct TV DVR finds it night or day, and saves it for me. I can set it to save all of the episodes, or just the first-run editions. All of this in beatiful HD too!

Then, when I have the time to watch television, all of my favorite shows are ready and waiting there for me to watch. No need to rearrange my schedule around the networks, not with my new TiVo.

While other companies like U-Verse and Verizion Fios have also begun to offer DVR service, satellite TV companies like DIRECTV pioneered the product.

Have you ever bought magazine subscriptions from those kids that come door to door? I have but I never will again. First of all what companies actually get these kids to knock on people’s doors to push magazine subscriptions? And what kind of parents let their kids knock on doors in the afternoon and late at night? The kids give this pitch that they will get a trip to Disneyland or they will get a gift certificate if they sell so many magazine subscriptions.

Is there not an easier way to get some sort of gift than pushing magazine subscriptions? The last time I signed up for a magazine subscription was when these teenage guys came to my door.

I listened to their pitch. I think they were trying to win a certificate for text books when they went to college. I gave them a check for twenty six dollars and ordered two magazines. The magazines never came and I lost the receipt so I have no idea who I signed up with.

The magazines never came. I lost the receipt the kid gave me so I had no idea who to call to complain to. I never did that again. Two months ago this guy calls me on my mobile. He tells me the bank I have a debit card with gave him my number to hear special offers from his company. Remember that fine print pamphlet our friendly banks send us with all that disclosure. Somewhere in there it gives them the right to share our information with companies like these unless we opt out. I guess I did not opt out.

He also offers me sixty dollars of free gas. All I need to do is pay for the mailing and handling, a total of five ninety five. I buy into it against my better judgement. The guy continues and wants to sell me magazine subscriptions for five dollars more. I balk. I asked what company is this again and what is your telephone number. The guy hangs on me. I dial the number on my caller ID. The number is busy for the next three days I do not know who called and I cannot get through to them.

The guy has my debit card number I gave for the mailing of my coupon pack. I am checking my account for a week for strange charges. Two weeks later I receive my discount coupon pack in the mail. It has a book of coupons to places to eat I would not eat at for free. The free gas was twelve coupons of five dollars each.

I had to send in my gas receipt with the coupon and wait for a rebate check. I could only use one coupon per month and I had to be a member of the coupon club to get my rebate each month. The membership is twenty nine ninety five a month.

The coupons were of places I would probably eat in. And the department store online store had prices that were higher than if I went to the store and shopped. I did not bother reading about the magazine subscriptions. I went right to my phone and cancelled my membership.
